May 2013 Furniture Insights
Somewhat in line with our expectations, new orders in March were down 1 percent from March 2012, according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. Orders were up 4 percent from February 2013. Just over 60 percent of the participants reported increased orders over last March, but most of those increases were small and there were several larger participants who reported declines in orders.

As we somewhat expected, new orders in February 2013 were down 3 percent from February 2012, according to our recent survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. We had heard through much of February and March that business had slowed somewhat.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in January 2013 were 7 percent ahead of orders received in January 2012. In January 2012, new orders were 13 percent higher than January 2011, so the January 2013 results were a good start for 2013 after somewhat disappointing results in November and December of 2012.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in December 2012 were 7 percent below orders in December 2011. We had expected a decline in orders based on conversations in December and early January although, as has been the case for some time now, the results were mixed among the participants.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders fell 1 percent in November 2012 compared to November 2011 and were off 4 percent from October. As we noted last month, monthly comparisons around the High Point Market dates are sometimes a bit misleading due to timing of Market and related orders written.
