New orders in November 2013 were 10 percent higher than new orders in November 2012 according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. This represented the eighth consecutive month that new orders exceeded the previous year’s monthly comparison and was also one of the better comparisons.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in October 2013 were 5 percent higher than new orders in October 2012. This compared to a 4 percent increase reported last month when comparing September 2013 to September 2012. October results continued the trend of increases in orders each month since March 2013 when there was a 1 percent decline reported.

New orders in September 2013 were 4 percent higher than orders in September 2012 and were 12 percent higher than August 2013, according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. New orders were up for 72 percent of our participants, slightly less than last month but very much in line. The results were also in line with most of what we had heard from conversations, that being orders up nicely for many but at least steady for most.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in August 2013 were 9 percent higher than August 2012. This result was pretty much in line with much of what we had heard up through the end of August. August 2012 orders were 8 percent higher than August 2012 so we were comparing to some pretty good results in the previous year.

New orders in July 2013 increased 13 percent over orders in July 2012, according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. New orders were 2 percent lower than June 2013 but that is pretty normal for the July to June comparison. Approximately 76 percent of the participants reported increased orders in July over July comparisons. This was up from 64 percent last month.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in June rose 9 percent over June 2012 but fell 6 percent from May, which is somewhat normal. The drop from May is usually caused by some market orders placed in May which would not normally be placed in June. Still, the increase over June a year ago was good news. New orders were up for 64 percent of the participants down slightly from 68 percent for May.

New orders in May 2013 were 6 percent higher than May 2012 orders, according to our recent survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. New orders in May were 13 percent higher than April 2013. May 2012 new orders were 10 percent higher than May 2011, so the May results were good considering they were compared to a good previous period. Orders were up for 68 percent of the participants, down from 80 percent reported last month.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in April were 11 percent higher than April 2012. April 2012 orders were down significantly from 2011 but we attributed that to the fact that April 2012 High Point Market was held late in the month versus an early market in 2011. But the 2013 market dates were almost the same as 2012 so that should not be a factor.

Somewhat in line with our expectations, new orders in March were down 1 percent from March 2012, according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. Orders were up 4 percent from February 2013. Just over 60 percent of the participants reported increased orders over last March, but most of those increases were small and there were several larger participants who reported declines in orders.

As we somewhat expected, new orders in February 2013 were down 3 percent from February 2012, according to our recent survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. We had heard through much of February and March that business had slowed somewhat.
