The results of our monthly survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors were a bit more positive than we expected. June 2016 new orders were 5% higher than June 2015, higher than expected, but the results were far from consistent. Just under one-half of the participants reported increased orders with several reporting double digit increases and several reporting double digit declines. Shipments were also up 2% over June 2015, with just over one-half of the participants reporting increases.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in May 2016 recovered slightly from three consecutive months of declines, with orders increasing 2%. The three declines had been 1% in February, 2% in March and 3% in April, so the reversal was good news.

For the third month in a row, new orders fell in April 2016 from the same month a year ago, according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. New orders declined 3% in April from April 2015, after falling 2% in March and 1% in February. New orders declined for 69% of our participants up from 56% reporting declines last month.

New orders in February 2016 fell 1% from new orders in February 2015, according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. This was the first time since February 2014 that new orders were down from the previous year and only the second time since March 2013.

The results of our survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors seemed to be in line with many of our recent conversations, which indicate that business seems to have softened in the last few months. New orders were up 2% in January compared to January 2015. Only 32% of our participants reported increased orders in January, down from about 50% last month.

According to our recent survey of furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders increased 1 percent over December 2014 orders. December 2014 orders were 15 percent higher than December 2013 orders so the 1 percent increase this year over December last year was still a pretty decent month. One-half of our participants reported increases this month down slightly from last month.

New orders in November 2015 were 4 percent higher than new orders in November 2014, according to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. The 4 percent increase followed a 1 percent increase in October and a flat September. New orders for the month were up for some 52 percent of the participants.

According to our latest survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors, new orders in September 2015 were basically even with September 2014. After 17 consecutive months of plus order percentages, the results were at least flat with the prior year and were up 9 percent over August. New orders were up for just over half of the participants, down from 60 percent reported last month.
